ATAS Footprint Chart — Every Mode Explained

Last updated August 5, 2026

The footprint chart is the reason most professional order flow traders use ATAS. It shows what actually happened inside each candle — how much aggressive buying hit each price, how much sellers absorbed, where the imbalance flipped.

ATAS ships more footprint modes than any other retail platform. This guide walks through each one and shows when to use it.

The five ATAS footprint modes

  • Bid/Ask footprint — volume traded at bid vs ask, the classic imbalance view.
  • Delta footprint — net delta per level (buys − sells).
  • Volume footprint — total volume per level, ignoring aggressor.
  • Profile footprint — horizontal profile inside each bar.
  • Trades footprint — raw trade counts, useful for spotting iceberg refills.

Reading imbalances the right way

Diagonal imbalances (3x rule) mark absorption. Stacked imbalances at range extremes mark exhaustion. A single-level imbalance inside a trend is continuation — traders confuse it with reversal all the time.

Best ATAS footprint settings

Bid/Ask mode + 3x imbalance highlighting + open-interest tick imbalance overlay. For ES/NQ use 1-tick per row on 5-minute or volume bars. For CL bump to 2 ticks per row.

Footprint + Cluster Search on Ultra

The real advantage of Ultra is combining the footprint you build for one instrument with Cluster Search running the same imbalance rule across 20+ symbols. Use 4U9••••••• on Ultra Annual for the biggest saving.

FAQ

What is a footprint chart in ATAS?

A footprint chart is a candle where each price level shows bid vs ask volume traded — letting you see aggression, absorption and imbalance inside the bar rather than just the OHLC outline.

Which ATAS footprint mode is best?

Bid/Ask footprint for imbalance trading, Delta footprint for aggression bias, Volume footprint for absorption levels. Serious traders keep two modes open side by side.

Do I need Ultra to run footprint charts?

No — Plus and Pro both include the footprint chart. Ultra adds Cluster Search which scans footprints across your entire watchlist in real time.

Are ATAS footprints better than Sierra Chart's?

Rendering-wise, ATAS is faster and clearer at retail scale. Sierra Chart is more configurable if you write your own studies in C++.
